All about Dalsimer Home and Garden
Dalsimer Home and Garden is a
slow-growth company which has built a reputation for
excellence, responsiveness and creativity.
We have always tried to develop long term
professional relationships with our clients based on
trust in our business principles, confidence in our
services and faith in our horticultural expertise. However, after two hurricanes
in one month, our clients not only had garden needs but
also home repair needs. Dalsimer,
in an effort to continue building our business based on
personal service, paid
close attention to our clients needs and answered by
officially becoming Dalsimer Home and Garden in
2004 (previously Dalsimer Landscaping). Melanie Dalsimer and Kris
Hansen are the active partners in this enterprise. Here’s a little bit about each
of them.
Melanie Dalsimer handles the garden design,
installation and maintenance. Melanie
follows in the family tradition. Her
grandfather, Allan Furth Dalsimer, became recognized as
one of the nation’s outstanding landscape artists. President of the National
Landscape Nurserymen’s Association and a governor of the
American Association of Nurserymen, his company’s garden
exhibit at the 1963 International Flower Show won the
William A. Sperling Memorial Trophy and his design and
execution of the Eastman Kodak “Child’s Garden of Fashion” won that show’s grand
trophy. Melanie was born in
Nairobi, Kenya and grew up admiring and exploring the rich
foliage of Africa. Fruit
trees and chameleons we’re her playground.
Later, volunteering for the work crew at Tyler
Arboretum, located in the Upper Mainline of Pennsylvania,
throughout her high school years proved an experience she
would never forget. Melanie
was privileged to complete her Mount Holyoke’s junior year
abroad at the Sorbonne in Paris where she did in depth
study of European gardens. After
graduation, Melanie was hired to manage a prestigious
private greenhouse. It was
during this time that she entered privately held specimens
into the Philadelphia Flower Show and completed formal
horticultural studies at Longwood Gardens outside of
Philadelphia. She furthered
her design skills at the USDA Graduate school in
Washington, D.C. where she began installing for landscape
designer, Joel Lerner, author of the Washington Post’s
“Green Scene” and owner of Environmental Design located in
Chevy Chase, Md.. Now a
Florida Landscape Designer and a University of Florida
Master Gardener, Melanie has returned to the rich tropical
foliage of her youth. She
strongly believes that each garden is an artistic
achievement that is best attained by planting plants
suited to their environment.
Kris Hansen was born one
of those “handy” guys. Disassembling
his
first ten-speed bike came as a shock to his mom, but not
as much as redesigning and reassembling it within a day. Kris became invaluable to his
Mom and his three sisters not only fixing household
items but also the family car by the age of fifteen. He credits his father, Kris,
for the “hands-on” approach to carpentry and automotive. In Arlington, Va Kris worked
for his uncle’s paint and wallpaper business where he
was first introduced to interior renovation. However,
his love of engines and automotive took him into
the management side for J.K Automotive where he worked
for ten years. While
working at J.K., Kris returned to school to study to
become an electrician and spent several years working
for SCS Electric. In 1997
Kris came to join the Dalsimer team as a manager. He began handling the garden
lighting installation, irrigation, custom trellis design
and installation and made sure that all equipment ran
perfectly. Now Kris has
expanded into all non-structural home repairs and
renovations. His invaluable
expertise and loyal following has recently made Kris a
fifty percent owner of the business.
